Historic
Woodlawn Cemetery, located on 22.5 acres in the heart of Ward 7 in
Washington, DC, is
the final resting place for thousands of Washingtonians, many of
whom were known locally and nationally.
However, the once beautiful grounds have deteriorated over
the years due to the lack of perpetual care funds.
Today, it is a continuing challenge to keep these hallowed
grounds free of overgrowth and clear of debris. |
In
2002,
the Woodlawn Cemetery Perpetual Care Association (WCPCA) and the Marshall
Heights Community Development Organization (MHCDO) have worked together to
organize a series
of clean-up events at the cemetery. Public
clean-ups were held in January and March, and a major effort is being
planned with Greater D.C. Cares in
May.
WCPCA,
MHCDO and others
are also working to raise awareness about the notable lives of these
interred at Woodlawn and to elicit financial and volunteer support to help
restore and preserve its sacred grounds.
To
be notified about the next public clean-up event, please email your name,
address and phone number to info@mhcdo.org
To
learn about how you can help restore and preserve Woodlawn
Cemetery, please contact Larry M. Smith, President of WCPCA, at (202)
