RELEASE
Contacts: EASTSIDE VILLAGE RESIDENTS MAP FUTURE Seat Pleasant, Maryland – More than 75 residents from Prince George’s County, Maryland, and Ward 7 in the District of Columbia gathered at Seat Pleasant Elementary School yesterday and today to identify revitalization priorities along a distressed section of their border. Through an extensive questionnaire and a visual survey, participants in the Quality Community Workshop evaluated the condition of their community and expressed their design preferences for urban components including stores, houses, apartments, parks, sidewalks and fences. Teams including both District and County residents then created maps that proposed development projects around Martin Luther King, Jr. Highway and Eastern Avenue, and East Capitol Street and Southern Avenue. The Quality Community Workshop is a product of the Eastside Village Project – an effort among public and private entities in the District of Columbia and Prince George’s County to improve the quality of life along their border. Project supporters will incorporate feedback from the workshop into plans to develop the area. Among the most enthusiastic supporters of the Eastside Village Project’s collaborative approach are the mayors who attended the workshop: “I cannot understate the importance of developing the gateways of our city, including areas along our border with Prince George’s County,” said Anthony A. Williams, Mayor of the District of Columbia. “By working together, the City and the County can more effectively attract retail and economic development projects that are mutually beneficial to the region.” “I commend the collaboration between the District of Columbia and Prince George’s County to beautify our borders and strengthen our economy,” said Johnnie R. Saxton, Mayor of Fairmount Heights. “I feel very positive that we are on the right road,” added Eugene Kennedy, Mayor of Seat Pleasant. ###
