Rebuilding Community Initiative

Planning Phase (1994-1995)

During the two-year planning phase, the MHCDO Board of Directors established a standing committee called the RCI Committee.  Like the Board of Directors, the RCI Committee represented all facets of the community including youth, parents, retirees, Advisory Neighborhood Commissioners, civic associations, businesses, schools, churches, public housing residents, and government officials.

The RCI Committee identified seven key issues affecting the community then created the following Working Groups which are open to all residents:

Education Working Group
Works with residents, school personnel and system administrators to ensure community input in education and strengthen relationships between communities and schools.
Co-conveners: Sylvia I. Butler, 202.397.7300, and William Wilson
Child Welfare Working Group, now the East River Family Strengthening Collaborative (ERFSC)
Now an independent 501 (c)(3) organization, ERFSC began as an RCI working group formed to address the issue of child welfare service delivery systems reform.
