Banneker Ridge
The
first major single-family sub-division to be built in Ward 7 in
over 40 years, Banneker Ridge is MHCDO's most ambitious
housing project to date. The 27 single-family detached homes
were designed following principles of "smart growth"
and new urbanism.
Banneker Ridge is one
of the final pieces in the overall effort to change the housing
types and demographic mix in the Greenway area. The
homes were built where 160 apartment units once stood. They
are across the street from a site that once had four dilapidated
public housing buildings. They are adjacent to Fort Dupont
Dwellings and Stoddart Terrace, which are in the midst of renovation.
They are down the street from a site that will be developed as
a townhouse community. These projects plus Meadow Green
Courts illustrate the attempt to redevelop this are by reducing
the density, changing the unit mix, and promoting economic integration.

The
Keys to the City: The DC Housing Market Takes Off,
Bolstering the Economy in the Nation's Capital
"...Southeast DC, perhaps best known for its physical
separation from the rest of the city, is rapidly evolving
as a prime location for new construction. Banneker
Ridge, a development of 27 single-family detached homes,
sits on the site of a vacant and abandoned apartment complex.
The project, in part financed by Bank of America and without
any government subsidies, is the first housing of this type
constructed in the neighborhood in more than 30 years.
The project features three different housing models designed
to fit many lifestyles and budgets...The homes of this new
community, developed by the Marshall Heights Community Development
Organization in collaboration with its partner CIH Homes,
have all been sold...As a result of Banneker Ridge's success,
the development partnership is embarking on a similar project
comprising single-family homes, Hilltop Terrace, which is
in the final planning stages."
