Smart
Growth: Next Steps for the Washington Reality Check
Len Forkas, chair of ULI Washington’s
“Reality Check”, will discuss the February 2005 event that was
an innovative planning process that brought together for one day
300 leaders from the Washington, DC region to envision how the
area could best accommodate 2 million new residents and 1.6 million
new jobs over the next 25 years. Participants included homebuilders,
environmentalists, elected officials, developers, business leaders,
civic leaders, and others. Using large maps and plastic blocks
to represent residents and jobs, the leaders sought to arrange
the changes in a way that would minimize traffic and environmental
impacts and maximize housing availability and quality of life.
The Washington Reality Check was modeled on similar exercises
in Salt Lake City, Chicago, San Diego, and Boston. He will conclude
with the next steps in refining and implementing this vision.
