A Benefit Dinner to Send Kids to Camp
Proceeds support The Joseph K. Smith Memorial Summer Camp Fund to 1) send inner-city youth to Camp Brown; 2) construct additional cabins; 3) repair hurricane damage. Sponsored by the MPD Chief of Police Citizens Advisory Council. Tickets: $40; $400 per table of 10.

"Men of Tomorrow" Summit
The summit will bring community, education, business and social advocates together to collectively address the question, "Are men today preparing our youth to be men of tomorrow?" Conceived and developed by OneStage Productions, the event will include a performance of the provoking stage play, "Like Father, Like Son," and a panel discussion of leading scholars and experts on sex, drugs, violence and other issues affecting today's youth. Come join us as we continue to explore the history of our northeast Washington communities. Presentations at this month's meeting will include "Protecting Ward 5's History" by Kathy Henderson, DC Council Candidate for Ward 5 and ANC 5B Commissioner; and "A History of the Northeast Gateway" by Patsy M. Fletcher, Community Liaison for the Historic Preservation Office of the DC Office of Planning. Our meetings take place the first Sunday of every month. National Parks America Tour -- Volunteer Day
Join the National Park Service for this volunteer-driven initiative to provide National Parks with manpower resources to complete important projects and engage communities in the National Park experience. Goals include improving the Fort Dupont Activity Center and the Fort Circle Parks Hiker-Biker Trail. All volunteers will receive free breakfast, lunch and a t-shirt. 13th Annual Hillcrest Garden Tour
This popular event showcases a 5-block section of our picturesque neighborhood. This year's tour will be led by a tour guide. A highlight of the tour will be a partial makeover of the front yard of one of our neighbors. Frager's Hardware will demonstrate landscaping techniques and provide plant selection tips that can transform a plain entrance into a more interesting, colorful and attractive one. Water will be provided during the walk. Following the tour, come to a backyard reception and enjoy a complimentary light lunch and door prizes. Tickets: $15 day of tour; $10 if purchased by June 14.
Tour begins at 11:00am and lasts 1 1/2 to 2 hours.

When the Lion Wrote History: Dramatic Readings from the "Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass
Published in 1845, the Narrative was the first autobiography of Douglass. In it, he describes the physical abuse, deprivation, and tragedy that he endured while enslaved and his strength of character in surviving these experiences. The book became a powerful tool in the anti-slavery cause and remains an eloquent, passionate account of one of the founders of the civic rights movement in this country. Free.
