2006 DC Housing Conference: Shaping the Future of Housing in Our
City
The Coalition for Nonprofit Housing and Economic Development
(CNHED) has teamed with The Fannie Mae Foundation to present a
housing conference focused on the District of Columbia. The conference
will expore recommendations from the Comprehensive Housing Strategy
Taskforce, and findings from the newly released Housing in the
Nation's Capital 2005. Continental breakfast and lunch will be
provided.

Orientation
The
Home Purchase Assistance Program (HPAP),
sponsored by the DC Department of Housing and Community Development,
assists low- and moderate-income individuals and families to purchase
homes in the District of Columbia by providing low- and no-interest
loans up to $30,000 to help with down payment and closing costs.
MHCDO conducts HPAP orientation sessions on the 2nd Monday of
each month.

the life and legacy of Frederick Douglass. The program will feature

Meeting on "Wellness" Policies for Schools
There are new requirements for all school
districts with federally funded school meals programs to create
new "wellness" policies addressing nutrition and physical
activity for students. These policies must by in place by the
start of the 2006-2007 school year. This is one of four community
meetings that will be held across the District of Columbia to
discuss creating Local Wellness Policies for our community. Parents,
students, school administrators and others are invited to share
their ideas and insights on nutrition and physical activity in

Serenity
Players Present "Harriet"
The Serenity Players is proud to present the
play, "Harriet," written by Kisha Kenyatta, based on
the life of Harriet Tubman, in observance of Black History month.
In this award-winning big-hearted one-act play with monologue
delivered by a former slave, Harriet recounts her childhood, her
path to freedom via the Underground Railroad, and her return to
lead her family and other slaves to freedom. Her tale is laced
with songs, dance and hymns. Serenity Players is a community-based
theater company located and operating in the Ward 7 community.

MHCDO
Summer Youth Employment Program - Info Session
MHCDO will again be a host agency for the
DC Department of Employment Services' Passport-to-Work Summer
Youth Employment Program. We plan to provide a meaningful, paid
work experience to 10 Ward 7 youth between the ages of 16 and
21 over a six-week period (June 26-August 2, 2006). MHCDO will
hold two Information Sessions about the program and application
process on Monday, February 20. Applications to work at MHCDO
will be distributed at the Information Sessions and will be due
by Friday, March 3. **DC youth ages 14-21 have until April
21 to apply for a summer job through DOES. (These youth will be
assigned by DOES to work at locations throughout the city.) Applications
are available at DOES (625 H Street, NE) and MHCDO (3939 Benning
Road, NE).
